Youth Support Partner – 20 hours – Greater Lewiston Area

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Youth MOVE Maine (YMM) is a program of THRIVE that works to improve services for youth. We advocate for and demonstrate new possibilities of wellness, healing, justice and education. We are a committed team of progressive leaders who all have our own story of resiliency.  We use the Trauma Informed Intentional Peer Support model where we integrate experiential education, restorative practices, transition age youth supports and a youth-driven approach. The population we support is determined by state and federal contractual agreements.

Under the direction of the YMM Regional Coordinator, the Youth Support Partner (YSP) is responsible for practicing the Youth Peer to Peer Model while working directly with youth to support them. YSP’s represent the voice of youth who use professional or natural supports to manage challenges related to mental health, family, juvenile justice, education and/or transition aged youth challenges. The YSP supports young people in navigating personal challenges and moving towards wellness. Additionally, YSP will help coordinate local peer support groups and aid in program development, research, and support Regional Coordinators. Youth MOVE Maine is to advise systems and providers to reflect trauma informed system of care values.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans and provides outreach on a regular basis to youth ages 14-26 involved with the child welfare, juvenile justice, education, and mental health systems to help them access Youth MOVE Maine.

  • Model YMM core practices such as resiliency and hope by sharing personal experiences in the context of Youth Peer Support to develop empowering relationships with youth and young adults, and encouraging their voice to be heard.
  • Co-facilitate peer support groups in the region with participants of YMM and Models Intentional Peer Support values.
  • Help YMM youth with the coordination of youth services with both formal and natural supports by attending meetings with them to offer support and empowerment.
  • Connects and supports youth and young adults in participating on community activities, collaboratives, advisory councils, and policy discussions.
  • Recruit, schedule, and ensure a positive experience for youth and young adults, volunteers, members and interns.
  • Co-develop curriculum as co-led with youth to help promote leadership, advocacy and life skills for youth and young adults in the community.
  • Co-planning of youth workshops for statewide and national conferences, seminars and workshops that support healthy youth culture.
  • Co-facilitate focus groups, needs assessments, and special projects for understanding how to better improve programs and practices serving youth and young adults and continuously work with staff and leadership to improve and expand Youth MOVE Maine statewide.
  • Aid in research and development with local team to coordinate the identification of and building relationship with key collaborators, funders, community groups, and providers for additional resources and support.
  • Maintain appropriate records, communication, calendars and document data related to program evaluation.
  • Operate as part of a collaborative learning organization, which holds youth and young adults, as well as staff and leadership and community partners on our board accountable and responsible for combined leadership of this organization. Take initiative and actively participate in learning from youth and other staff, as well as teaching and offering what they are able.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains client confidentiality at all times in accordance with federal, state, and agency standards.
  • Promotes a positive agency image to staff and others and represents the agency to the community in a professional manner by demonstrating a professional attitude, sound judgment, and continuity in interactions with all external customers.
  • Maintains and utilizes knowledge of community resources.
  • Participates in and schedules regular staff meetings, supervisory sessions, and other inter-agency and intra-agency meetings, as appropriate.
  • Attends appropriate trainings to maintain and/or enhance job skills.
  • Use personal vehicle for client transportation, outreach in the community, home visits, or agency-related business.
  • Completes and submits accurate, neat and legible records, logs, forms, and reports in a timely manner in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Duties require any combination of education and training equivalent to possession of a bachelor’s degree with emphasis in child or youth education, development, mental health and/or related fields of study. Bachelor’s degree in related field and directly related experience preferred.
  • Must have firsthand experience as a consumer of mental health services, juvenile justice, child welfare, or education services and able to bring personal knowledge gained through this experience to the system of care as a youth advocate to ensure that the SOC is youth guided.
  • Must enroll and complete the Certified Intentional Peer Support Specialist training.
  • Must possess a valid State of Maine driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of positive youth development approach and strategies.
  • Knowledge of organizations, programs and resources available within the community that support positive youth development with youth identified as having a serious emotional disturbance.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with individuals and groups from diverse populations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and task.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations.
  • Must possess basic computer skills; PC, word, excel. Other computing/web/design skills desirable.
  • Ability to co- facilitate trainings and community based focus groups
  • Ability to identify problems and effect problem solving resolution.
  • Ability to consistently work independently and manage tasks, problem-solving, and documentation without on-site supervision.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities related to interns or volunteers.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Normal office environment, not subject to extremes in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
  • Experiences interruptions to assist consumers, staff members, agency, etc.
  • May spend periods at terminal, on telephone, driving to meetings or operating office machines, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
  • Extensive travel in personal vehicle required. Mileage reimbursed from the home or community office.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of supplies, files, documents, records, etc.
